The Encarta Dictionary gives a very plain definition to the word volunteer: somebody who works for free. Florida Health Care Association views volunteers in terms of their outreach to a community. Volunteers are diverse, bringing to long term care their different nationalities, different ages, and unique life histories. When sown freely in community service, these gifts greatly enrich the lives of residents and families.

FHCA member facilities have many opportunities for volunteerism, including:

• Planning monthly birthday parties for residents
• Visiting with pets
• Gardening
• Decorating for holidays or special occasions
• Reading to residents
• Providing birthday or Christmas gifts
