Dining Assistants
The federal regulation allowing the use of nutrition and hydration assistants (also known as feeding or dining assistants) in nursing homes went into effect this past Monday, October 27, 2003. This means that states now have the option of permitting facilities to put to good use this new group of long term care workers that are desperately needed during this time of workforce shortages across the health care professions. HOWEVER, AS OF OCTOBER 31, 2003, FLORIDA'S AGENCY FOR HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION HAS NOT AUTHORIZED OR MADE PROVISION FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS NEW FEDERAL RULE IN FLORIDA. THEREFORE FACILITIES IN FLORIDA SHOULD NOT IMPLEMENT A DINING ASSISTANT PROGRAM UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE FROM FHCA OR THE AGENCY. In the meantime, we have provided a resource for "more information" (http://www.ahca.org/members/p-g-r/toolkits/assistants.htm).
