Long Term Care Excellence in Nursing Awards

FHCA presented its 2008 Excellence in Nursing Awards to honor some of the best nurses in long term care. The awards recognize nurse leaders who show professional excellence in their day-to-day performance; acknowledge the value of the nursing profession; demonstrate the contributions that nurses make to quality care; and promote long term care nursing as a specialty. The awards were presented during FHCA's annual Nurse Leadership Program, which took place in Clearwater in May.

 
LPN of the Year - Juanita Newsome, All Saints Catholic Nursing Home in Jacksonville
Arthur Branner is a caring individual with a passion for improving the quality of life for his fellow residents of Palm Garden of Ocala. He teaches Sunday school, leads a choir group and has even given tax prep assistance to the staff and residents. Activities director Alice Constant said, "His passion for life never slows down." RN of the Year - Cheri Ware, Consulate Healthcare in Winter Haven
Ware has been an RN since 1986 and in long term care since 1999. Ware teaches CNA classes at her facility, where she "strives to stay abreast of the ever-changing healthcare data and transforms it into an interactive in-service that is instructional as well as enjoyable," according to her DON. Nurse Administrator of the Year - Tina Vanaman, Palm Garden of Ocala
Vanaman began her career as a CNA in 1984 with a wide array of experience. She has served as Palm Garden's DON for two years and is described as a "change agent" for the facility. Vanaman has brought culture change to Palm Garden with a work redesign of CNA assignments and was recently was awarded a $66,000 grant from the Agency for Health Care Administration to develop and implement three major culture change programs.
