Nearly 200 registrants and faculty members from around the country traveled to St. Petersburg Beach in May for FHCA's 2009 Nurse Leadership Program from May 27-29, 2009, which featured the theme "Return on Investment." The goal of this year's program was to help participants achieve measurable results in today's changing long term care environment by providing them with resources related to funding, operations, regulations and quality challenges, as well improved care delivery services and effective service management.

Nationally recognized keynote speakers included Mary Tellis-Nayak of My InnerView, Inc., who gave an engaging presentation on the importance of workplace satisfaction and how making the investment in your nurse leaders can result in tremendous dividends to your residents' care. Tra Beicher from TIS, Inc. gave an in depth discussion about root-cause analysis, and Dr. Howard Tuch provided a physician's perspective on the future of long term care reform.

Participants also had the opportunity to learn more about staffing trends in Florida and culture change, as well as psychological first aid training used during disaster response. Presentations also focused on nursing budgets and pay-for-performance, an update on the QIS and best practices in nursing, with a focus on pressure ulcer reduction.

First-ever CNA Leadership Day
This year's Nurse Leadership Program also featured a special opportunity for CNAs to gain education and access to some of the country's top speakers in the frontline of long term care. Almost 50 CNAs from across the state took part in the leadership day, which included presentations from Mary Tellis-Nayak, Lori Porter of the National Association of Health Care Assistants and FHCA's own Workforce Committee Chair, Cathy Sena.

Nurse Leaders honored
During the event, FHCA presented its 2009 Long Term Care Excellence in Nursing Awards. These annual awards are given in recognition of nurse leaders who show day-to-day professional excellence, acknowledge the value of nursing profession, demonstrate the contributions that nurses make to quality care and promote long term care nursing as a specialty. NLP on the move
The TradeWinds Island Grand Resort on St. Petersburg Beach made an excellent backdrop for this year's program. Next year, FHCA will move locations and months for the Nurse Leadership Program, but participants can still expect an engaging agenda and of course, a beach-front view. Join FHCA at the Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort from September 7-9, 2010.
