Staffing Hints
Each nursing home facility must have a minimum certified nursing assistant staffing of 2.3 hours of direct care per resident per day. In addition, no facility will staff below one certified nursing assistant per 20 residents. (1:20)
Each nursing home facility must have a minimum licensed nursing staffing of 1.0 hour of direct care per resident per day. In addition, no facility will staff below one licensed nurse per 40 residents. (1:40)
For example, the calculation of staffing hours per patient day for a facility with a MIDNIGHT census of 120 follows:
Certified nursing assistants
The facility must have 276 minimum hours of care per day and based on an 8-hour shift 34.50 certified nursing assistant FTE�s for the next day AND a minimum of 6 certified nursing assistants at any point in time.
Licensed nurses
The facility must have a minimum of 120 hours of care per day and based on an 8-hour shift a minimum of 15 FTE�s for the next day AND a minimum of 3 licensed nurses at any point in time.
This is true whether the facility has four 30-bed wings, or two 60-bed floors. The staffing is based on the facility census, not the configuration of the building.
The agency survey team will request staffing information for the two-week time period preceding the survey and will compare the required hours with the actual time worked as supported by time cards, payroll records, or computer printouts.
"Unless otherwise approved by the agency, licensed nurses counted towards the minimum staffing requirements for certified nursing assistants must exclusively perform the duties of a certified nursing assistant for the entire shift and shall not also be counted towards the minimum staffing requirements for licensed nurses."
