FHCA Announces Hialeah Shores Nursing & Rehabilitation Center as Winner of 2026 Long Term Care Photo Contest

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In conjunction with National Skilled Nursing Care Week, the Florida Health Care Association (FHCA) has announced that Hialeah Shores Nursing & Rehabilitation Center is the first-place winner of FHCA’s 2026 Long Term Care Photo Contest. The annual contest, which drew nearly 250 entries from across the state, celebrated the theme “Picture What Matters” to highlight the important connections and compassionate care that transpires every day in Florida’s long term care centers.

The winning photo, titled “With Santa in the House, Everything is Magical,” was captured by Yanesly Hernandez, Director of Activities at Hialeah Shores. Her photograph features three different generations of happiness during the holiday season in one image - the center's social worker, a 100-year-old resident and several visiting children enjoying a special visit from Santa.

“From festive decorations and shared meals to laughter, music, and special gatherings, these joyful moments remind everyone that they are never alone and are deeply loved,” says Isis Fernandez, Hialeah Shores Administrator. “Our staff goes above and beyond to create magical holiday memories that bring smiles to our residents’ faces and comfort to their hearts.”

As the first-place winner, Hialeah Shores received a $500 contribution from FHCA to sponsor a social event for residents and staff, and Hernandez received a $50 gift card for her submission.

The second-place photo, “Gone Fishing,” was submitted by Shayne Baumgardner, Administrator at Cross City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and captures a resident proudly showing off his catch during a resident fishing trip. Baumgardner and the activity director planned the trip, during which residents enjoyed fishing and lunch by the lake.

“Long term care isn't just about meeting the daily needs, it's about creating opportunities for meaningful experiences and memories that bring happiness and connection," said Baumgardner. "This photo reflects the heart of why I do what I do - helping residents continue to live life fully with dignity."

Cross City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center received a $300 contribution from FHCA for a resident and staff social event, and Baumgardner received a $50 gift card.

The third-place photo, “Rudine,” was taken by Mike Losagio, Activities Director at Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehab Center  in St. Augustine and highlights the joy that animals play in the lives of residents. Ms. Rudine, who spent her life riding horses, co-stars in the photo with her beloved horse, LELE.

"Ms. Rudine and the facility always look forward to the days when her friend brings LELE to the facility. We all look forward to seeing Ms. Rudine’s face light up with joy and excitement,” said Losagio, who is known for tailoring residents' activities and engagement to their individual life stories.
