Risk and Reality: How to Manage and What to Expect from a Legal Perspective

This virtual, live training is designed to identify and provide best practices to reduce risks in long term care. Participants will hear from Karen Goldsmith, FHCA’s Regulatory Counsel, and Stephen Lomonico, FHCA’s Associate Member Vice President, about the legal ramifications of lawsuits against skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. There will also be discussion on how to protect both the facility and individual team members. Case studies will be reviewed by Robin Bleier, RB Health Partners, Inc., and Hazel Mahoney, Facility Support Company, which will help attendees understand and evaluate the process of managing and taking the appropriate steps to help with risk reduction.

Nursing Home Administrators, Directors of Nursing, Risk Managers, Supervisors, Social Workers, and Regional Teams will all benefit from this program.

  • Training Date: Registered attendees will access the live broadcasted training via Zoom on September 27, 2023, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. EST.
  • Training Materials: post-quiz; handout materials
  • Continuing Education Credits: Attendees will earn a total of 2 computer based CEUs.
    FHCA will post contact hours to CE Broker by October 20, 2023. Participants must attend the two-hour live, virtual training and complete the post-quiz by October 18, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. EST to receive CEUs.

Robin Bleier, President, RB Health Partners, Inc
Robin A. Bleier is the President of RB Health Partners, Inc., a long-term care consultancy firm. She is the past Chair of the FHCA Emergency Preparedness Council, past Chair of the FHC-PAC, and a vested long term care advocate through her volunteerism and affiliation with numerous professional associations and committees. Robin is a featured state and national presenter, is FHCA’s RAI-MDS-PPS Bootcamp trainer and has been educating on this and other topics nationally since 1998. RB Health Partners, Inc. has a strategic partnership with FHCA, consulting with the Association on quality affairs, including survey readiness.

Karen Goldsmith, Attorney, FHCA Regulatory Counsel
Karen Goldsmith currently serves as Florida Health Care Association’s Regulatory Counsel and previously served the association as Legal Counsel since 1980. She represents several providers of nursing homes and assisted living facilities. She is active on the American Health Care Association’s Legal Committee and served as chairman for two terms. She is active on the American Health Lawyers’ Association.  She speaks often on healthcare and legal issues and has written several articles.

Steve Lomonico, President, Thrive Behavioral Sciences
Steve Lomonico serves as the President, CEO, and Owner of Thrive Behavioral Sciences, a company providing Psychiatry and Psychology services to Nursing and Assisted Living facilities across the state of Florida. As a licensed Nursing Home Administrator of 33 years and Certified Risk Manager, Steve offers valuable insight and experience for health care providers. He has been an active member of the FHCA board, serving on 6 different committees and councils, to lead, advise, and collaborate with other members to increase the quality of care for Florida Residents.

Hazel Mahoney, Chief Compliance Officer, Facility Support Company
Hazel Mahoney has been a Registered Nurse since 1978, training originally in England, working in the Middle East and then moving to Florida in 1990. She has worked in hospitals, long term care centers and physician provider organizations in various capacities. Hazel completed her BA in Health Administration through the University of Dundee distance learning program in 2012. Hazel has developed, implemented and monitored clinical risk management programs for three long term care companies in Florida, moving into Compliance in 2013. In 2014, Hazel achieved certification in Health Care Compliance and Health Care Privacy Compliance. She has developed, implemented, and now oversees comprehensive Ethics and Compliance Programs for different operating companies which meet OIG guidelines.
