John Mangine Named 2023 Walter M. Johnson, Jr. Circle of Excellence Award Recipient

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – John Mangine (right), Chief Operating Officer for Southern Healthcare Management, was recognized for his years of service to the Florida Health Care Association (FHCA) with the Walter M. Johnson, Jr. Circle of Excellence Award. The award was presented to Mangine in front of 800 of Florida’s finest long term care professionals, including his Southern Healthcare Management team members, and his family, during FHCA’s 2023 Annual Conference & Trade Show in Orlando.

The Walter M. Johnson, Jr. Circle of Excellence Award is the highest honor given by FHCA to recognize leadership in the Association and dedication to enhancing the long term care profession. Like the award’s namesake, Mangine serves in a leadership position within the Association, has an ongoing commitment to Florida’s long term caregivers and ensuring that the residents entrusted to them receive the highest quality care.

“John clearly understands that culture, recognition and creating leadership pathways is critical to strengthening Florida’s long term care workforce,” said Emmett Reed, FHCA Chief Executive Officer. “He is also known for being a champion for quality care, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award than John.”

Mangine has worked in long term care for nearly 40 years, starting as an administrator in training in Andover, Mass. He moved to Florida as a nursing home administrator in 1995 and began climbing the career ladder to become a successful operator. As COO of Southern Healthcare Management, Mangine oversees 41 long term care and rehabilitation centers throughout Florida, Georgia and North Carolina.

Mangine is actively engaged in FHCA’s legislative advocacy and serves as an executive member of FHCA’s political action committee. He recognizes the value of building relationships and hosting facility tours with legislators to help inform them about the challenges providers face and the quality care that residents receive.

Mangine is also known for mentoring others to help them grow their careers. He has often returned to his alma mater, the University of New Hampshire, to speak with students and meet with administrative leaders at the College of Health and Human Services, to give them a better understanding of the career opportunities in long term care. He also recognizes that for Florida to be the gold standard in quality, the profession must continue to develop leaders and inspire future generations to consider long term care as a career path.

“We all draw our inspiration from those who do the heavy lifting in our centers, the individuals who take care of the residents,” said Mangine. “I’ve been fortunate to work for a company for so many years that has put quality and team members first in everything we’ve faced. This award is unexpected and appreciated, and I’m proud to be recognized among my peers in a profession that I love.”

The Circle of Excellence Award was established in 1972 in honor of Walter Johnson Jr., who served as the FHCA President between 1969 and 1971 and was a significant force in the growth and development of FHCA. The award is part of FHCA’s Long Term Care Achievement Awards, sponsored by Elite Medical Staffing, which were presented during FHCA’s Annual Conference, July 23-27 at the Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando. These awards annually honor a Nursing Home and Assisted Living Facility Administrator of the Year, a business partner, and other individuals for their service and dedication to long term care.
